We held an informal Arithmetic class at a students home last night. Not only was it a lovely place to watch a movie and talk shop, but it was also a great chance to get to know the freshman a bit better.
It is easy to forget how significant a little hospitality can be.
An added surprise was the informal jam after the class. The freshman spontaneously gathered in little studio near the front of the house and began to play together.
I had to leave early for the drive home, but was sad to go. I hope the jam is just a prelude to their growing friendship as they continue on their journey with us here at New College.
I guess that I also need to mention that I was serenaded with “My Only Spunshine.”
The “jam” was far from spontaneous. from the moment I saw those instruments, I knew what I needed to do and was merely biding the time; the other students were clay on my potters wheel.

My Only Spunshine. If that doesn’t put a skip in your step, I don’t know what will.
